The Ritual of the Table | NEJM –

I’ve always liked to think that seeing their doctor in person is also what helps buffer our patients against the frustrations induced by insurance plans and the inefficiencies of even the best health care system. I was afraid — afraid that the televisits wouldn’t work but even more afraid that they might. The vulnerability that comes with change and the humility required to practice new skills may be uncomfortable, but our rituals are honored rather than diminished by the fact that relationships can still live without the structure those practices provide.
